Day 712 – December 12th, 2013
Yesterday I answered a question on Tumblr, so I thought I’d mirror that answer here. The question was, “where do you find your reference images? or who/what influenced these solo-journey pieces?” Here’s my answer:
Most of the time I don’t use reference for these dailies. The times that I do, my usual method is just to google “[some country name] + landscape” or something similar. Different parts of the world have different feels, and that can help you establish a mood/direction if you don’t have one in mind.
As far as influences for the “lone wanderer” aesthetic I tend to use, I’m just really interested in the idea of exploration, and the idea of treating an environment as a character. Environments have plenty of stories to tell, and provide a huge canvas for doing so. I find it fun to think about tiny figures exploring their world and being dwarfed by the enormity of the landscape around them.
Ideas like these about scale, storytelling, and exploration are all things I’m working into a long-term project that I’m not quite ready to talk about yet, but I can’t wait to one day get it out there! :)
